Call for Panoply
Arts Festival Entries: You’re invited to write a 10-Minute Play pertaining to The Arts Council’s
theme, Alabama Threads-From Cotton
to the Cosmos for the Panoply Arts Festival 2009, presented by Boeing.
(In other words, the script should reflect a historic era or event that
occurred in the state of Alabama – for 2009 has been announced by the State
Tourism Board as “The Year of Alabama History”!) It’s The Arts
Council’s salute to the magic of theater! 10-Minute Plays are a
relatively new dramatic structure; in our fast-food society of short
attention spans and commitment phobias, this competition is the perfect
literary/theatric “combo meal” to educate and expose the general public to
bite-sized portions of the arts. Festival organizers are currently seeking submissions from playwrights for this very popular annual event. Aspiring, novice, and longtime authors are asked to develop a full plot with a beginning, middle, and end – all within a running time of seven to ten minutes and with a cast of no more than four characters. As befitting the family nature of Panoply, plays must be for a general audience base; no “mature audience only” material. Previous winners have come from Chicago, Boston, Los Angeles, and Alexandria – and, of course, the Huntsville area – but submissions have been accepted from everywhere! Last year’s committee received scripts from playwrights in twenty-four states, the District of Columbia, Canada, Australia, England, and Scotland! Submitted
scripts will go through a juried process, with winners receiving a $50 stipend for their work.
However, the greatest reward is the chance for the winning playwrights to see
their creation brought to life, performed and directed by local individuals
at the Panoply
Arts Festival – which celebrates its 28th year
Friday-Sunday, April 24-26, 2009 in Big Spring International Park in downtown
Huntsville, Alabama. The Panoply crew will take the responsibility of working with area schools and drama troupes to produce each play five times in the park during the festival. Panoply Arts Festival is the South’s Most All-Embracing ARTStravaganza, held annually on the last full weekend of April in downtown Huntsville, Alabama’s Big Spring International Park. In both 2007 and 2008, this celebration of the arts attracted over 140,000 people and continues to offer the community a wide array of the arts, including 5 performing stages showcasing the best in theater, music, and dance, the Panoply Choreography Competition, a juried Art Marketplace with artists from across the US, many FREE make-and-take activities for children and families, the Global Village, and the 10-Minute Playwright Competition, among other contests. The deadline for applications is
approaching: all submissions must be postmarked by Wednesday, 31 December 2008!
Submissions (application and script) should be mailed to: Panoply 10-Minute Playwright Competition; c/o
The Arts Council, Inc.; 700 Monroe Street, SW; Suite 2; Huntsville, AL
35801 OR Fax to Attn:
10-Minute Playwright Competition at (256) 533-3811 Playwrights should visit the Panoply website at www.panoply.org for guidelines and further specifics. For more information, e-mail The Arts Council office at jbroad@panoply.org or call (256) 519-2787, ext. 205. Winners will be notified by Monday, 16 February 2009; production crews will receive the scripts by Monday, 23 February; and dress rehearsals will take place on Thursday, 23 April. |

The 1940s Radio Hour: A different time is evoked in
this marvelously theatrical show about a live broadcast of The Mutual
Manhattan Variety Cavalcade from the Hotel Astor's Algonquin Room on December
21, 1942. The spirit of that bygone era, when the world was at war and pop
music meant "Strike Up the Band" and "Boogie Woogie Bugle
Boy" (both in this show), is accurately captured as the harassed
producer copes with a drunken lead singer, the delivery boy who wants a
chance at the microphone, the second banana who dreams of singing a ballad,
and the trumpet-playing sound-effects man who chooses a fighter plane over
Glenn Miller. Director: Jack Mann. Music Director: Jay Tumminello. Featuring:
Sam Chalker, Janice Hill, Jan D. Hunter, Jeff Johnson, Lonnie Parsons, Lucas

Blues in the Night: The universal language of the
blues wails out full and strong in this dynamite dramatic revue of 26 hot and
torchy numbers that tell of the sweet, sexy and sorrowful experiences three
women have with a snake of a man who does them wrong. The interwoven stories
are defined through songs that cover the range of this indigenous American
art form. Songs by Bessie Smith, Duke Ellington, Johnny Mercer, Harold Arlen,
Alberta Hunter, Ida Cox and others tell of the pain and misery of life and
love and of the dogged determination to get through it all. Alternately wistful,
tender and raunchy, Blues In The Night
is a production with a larger-than-life score and vocal arrangements.

The History Boys: Written By Alan Bennett.
Directed By Billy Ray Brewton. February. An unruly bunch of bright, funny
sixth-form (senior) boys in a British boarding school are, as such boys will
be, in pursuit of sex, sport, and a place at a good university - generally in
that order. In all their efforts, they are helped and hindered, enlightened
and bemused, by a maverick English teacher who seeks to broaden their
horizons in sometimes undefined ways, and by a young history teacher who
questions the methods, as well as the aim, of their schooling. In The History Boys, Alan Bennett evokes
the special period and place that the sixth form represents in an English
boy's life. In doing so, he raises - with gentle wit and pitch-perfect
command of character - not only universal questions about the nature of
history and how it is taught but also questions about the purpose of
education today. Winner of the Tony
Award for Best Play, as well as numerous other awards and accolades. This is the Alabama premiere of this
production. |

Wait Until Dark: Written By Frederick Knott. Directed By J.J. Marrs. April. A sinister con man, Roat, and two ex-convicts, Mike and Carlino, are about to meet their match. They have traced the location of a mysterious doll, which they are much interested in, to the Greenwich Village apartment of Sam Hendrix and his blind wife, Susy. Sam had apparently been persuaded by a strange woman to transport the doll across the Canadian border, not knowing that sewn inside were several grams of heroin. When the woman is murdered the situation becomes more urgent. The con man and his ex-convicts, through a cleverly constructed deception, convince Susy that the police have implicated Sam in the woman's murder, and the doll, which she believes is the key to his innocence, is evidence. She refuses to reveal its location, and with the help of a young neighbor, figures out she is the victim of a bizarre charade. But when Roat kills his associates, a deadly game of cat and mouse ensues between the two. Susy knows the only way to play fair is by her rules, so when darkness falls she turns off all the lights leaving both of them to maneuver in the dark until the game ends. Turned into a major motion picture, featuring Audrey Hepburn and Alan Arkin. |
